Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada

Reduction program among industry's best

Exploration and production in the oil and natural gas industry can be a challenging business, especially when a company is committed to minimizing its greenhouse gas emissions.

Devon works diligently to conduct its operations in an environmentally responsible way and to reduce its impact on land, water and the air.

Emission reduction is a key to Devon’s stewardship commitment. Our track record is illustrated by a tradition of accomplishment that demonstrates our drive to be an industry leader.

In Canada, we continue to take a proactive approach to emission reduction that reaches beyond government mandates. We use innovation and implement technology that continues to reduce our emissions. We support educational programs that encourage emission reduction, and we plan for further reductions in the future. Being proactive on reducing greenhouse gases saves energy and reduces operating costs while reducing environmental impacts and providing tangible value to our business.

Devon has taken an aggressive stance on emission reduction. We are dedicated to setting targets to improve the energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at our facilities. We also have taken on the responsibility to plan methods of reaching these targets and to monitor our progress.

We improve, educate and plan ahead. We've optimized processes, developed energy efficiency projects and significantly reduced gas venting and fugitive emissions.

Since 2000, we have reduced venting emissions by 1.5 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent in our Lloydminster and Bonnyville districts. In 2009, we initiated an energy efficiency and GHG reduction program in our nine Canadian field districts to encourage the identification and implementation of projects that reduce energy usage and GHG emissions. Since 2009, we have developed a wide range of projects including waste heat recovery, natural gas vehicle conversions and solar pumps to reduce GHG emissions by an additional 1.3 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

As further evidence of the company's commitment to reducing environmental impacts, Devon in 2012 helped launch the Canadian Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating improvements in environmental performance through collaboration and innovation. Through COSIA, Devon will invest significant capital and resources into developing and implementing technologies to reduce GHG emissions from its oil sands operations.

For Devon, it is not enough to comply with minimum standards set by federal and provincial reporting mandates. We strive to improve, educate and plan ahead because a proactive emission reduction program saves energy, is good for the environment and is good for business.
