Initiatives - Sundown Island

Several species of birds have a more inviting place to nest in south Texas thanks to the contributions of energetic and dedicated Devon employees.

For the past three years, employees from the Houston office and their family members have volunteered to help in the cleanup efforts of the Sundown Island Bird Sanctuary. Known to locals as Bird Island, the sanctuary is located in Matagorda Bay near Port O’Connor, Texas.

Volunteers work on nesting platforms and dock maintenance. They also help create bird habitat, do clean up work and build freshwater ponds. Along with the volunteer efforts, Devon has contributed monetarily to the sanctuary over the years. Devon’s contribution helped purchase a windmill and piping to supply fresh water to the ponds.

Sundown Island is a critical nesting location for up to 18 species of birds, including the endangered brown pelican and reddish egret.

The low-lying, 40-acre Sundown Island was created by dredging soil from ship channels in 1962 and is managed by the National Audubon Society’s Texas Coastal Sanctuaries Program.
